The traditional concept of the funeral is beginning to change. People are realizing that burial is not sustainable ecologically or economically and demand for customized funerals is increasing.

That’s when I began research into how coral grows and the rehabilitation efforts of regrowing the dying coral colonies around the world. The concept of microfragmented coral, which grows exponentially faster than traditionally planted coral, came up. Then I talked to an oceanographer about an object that could be relatively immobile on the ocean floor once placed but also reasonably movable by an individual on land. From that, I came up with the concept of the sea star urn.
